Charles H. Taylor Biography
Mr. Taylor graduated from Bishop Ireton High School, an all-boys Catholic preparatory school in Alexandria, VA in 1982. He was awarded the Salesian Medal at commencement, the school’s highest honor. He attended the University of Michigan as both a Presser and Merit Scholar and went on to graduate from the prestigious School of Music, Theater and Dance with a double degree in both Music Education and Music Performance in 1986.
An accomplished musician, Mr. Taylor has performed with numerous Symphony Bands and Orchestras and has toured extensively throughout the United States and Europe. Mr. Taylor presently holds a Masters Degree in Educational Leadership from Grand Valley State University. He has been an educator in Northern Michigan for the past 34 years with half his career spent as a successful public school band director and the other half as a highly effective Catholic school administrator.
He has taught at all levels: elementary, junior high and high school and by way of three separate diocesan assignments (K-8, 3-5, & 9-12 respectively) has served as an administrator at all levels as well. Mr. Taylor was appointed in the summer of 2008 to serve the Diocese of Gaylord as Superintendent of Catholic Schools and served in that position until the spring of 2014. In that time he served as a member of the executive board for the Michigan Association of Non-Public Schools and in 2010 was named by Detroit Archbishop Allen Vigneron to chair the Bishops’ State Education Committee for the Michigan Catholic Conference.
He was named teacher of the year for Gaylord Middle School in 1990. In 2014 he was named Band Director of the Year by District II of the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association and in that same year was additionally nominated for State Band Director of the Year. Currently he is the Director of Bands for the Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools in Traverse City. He and his wife Sharon of 29 years have 4 children; Allison Grace (20), Madelyn Rose (19), Charles Benjamin (15), and Zachary Thomas (13). His hobbies are playing and listening to music, cooking, running and spending time with his family.
