St. Cecilia

St. Cecilia Prayer
Dear St. Cecilia
Inspire musicians
To gladden the hearts
of people
By filling the air
With God’s gift of music
And reminding them
Of the Divine musician
Who created all beauty.

Saint Cecilia lived around the 2nd century A.D. in Rome, Italy. Cecilia was known to have been the daughter of a wealthy Roman family. She had the calling from her earliest years to live a life in Christ and was completely committed to her faith. She was known for her kindness and generosity. She fed the hungry, gave drink to the thirsty, sheltered the homeless, clothed the naked and buried the dead.
Her parents arranged for her to be married to a pagan. She convinced her then fiancé, who was named Valarian, to be baptized. Soon after they were married, Valarian and his brother (who had also been baptized) were both executed for helping to bury the many Christians slain each day during a great persecution. Cecilia mourned their loss and continued to preach and was said to have converted four hundred persons to the faith.
In time she too was arrested and sentenced to death for helping to spread Christianity by her words and deeds. She is one of the early martyrs of the Church who gave her life for her beliefs.
Although it is not known if Cecilia knew how to play an instrument, she is regarded as the patroness of music and musicians, because she heard heavenly music in her heart when she was married. It is written that as the musicians played at her wedding to Valarian, she could hear the Angel choirs and "sang in her heart to the Lord”. She is represented in art with an organ or organ-pipes in her hand. Her feast day is celebrated on November 22nd.
